In the Ascent, runners begin in the town of Manitou Springs at an elevation of 6,295 feet. The race proceeds up Barr Trail, 13.1 miles to the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,050 feet.
In the Marathon, run the following day, runners race from Manitou Springs to the summit and then return down Barr Trail to Manitou Springs, covering 26.2 miles in all.
Runners who complete both races in consecutive days earn the title of "Doubler".
